A Force for Change: The Baroness Drives Latex from Fetish to Fashion
Twenty years ago there were only three latex designers in all of North America and only one in New York: The Baroness. Beginning in a small studio in 1994, The Baroness was a pioneer, selling her latex fashions to private clients by appointment only, and wholesale to select boutiques. In 1995 she launched the world’s first online latex clothing store, at Baroness.com.
The Baroness has been instrumental in the emergence of rubber from the darkness of dungeons into the bright lights of the silver screen, high fashion catwalks and red carpet award shows. Over the past 20 years she has come to be known as “The Grand Dame of Latex”.
During her twenty years of exploring the unique properties of latex and its construction, The Baroness has influenced the fashion industry through collaborations with Lacoste, NYC men’s wear designer Patrik Ervell, women’s wear designer Nourish Ferrari, and Opening Ceremony. Her inflatable straight jacket was exhibited in the Fashion Institute of Technology museum.
The Baroness’ haute couture designs have made her the go-to designer for an A-list of celebrities, latex lovers, and the fashion elite, including Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo (who she dressed for the Met Gala Punk Ball); Performers Lady GaGa, Nikki Minaj, and Beyonce; Victoria’s Secret models Naomi Campbell and Giselle; actress Chloe Sevigny; downtown diva Amanda Lepore; and burlesque dancer Dita von Teese; plus many celebrities whose affection for latex remains private.
As an authority on latex, alternative life styles, and clothing and power, The Baroness and her work have been publicized in countless books and magazines including Valerie Steele’s Fetish, Fashion, Sex and Power; The New York Times fashion section; V magazine; Vogue; The Village Voice; Mademoiselle; Maxim and others. She has been featured on both HBO’s Real Sex and The Discovery Channel.
With her flair for style and artistic vision, The Baroness has performed, lectured and hosted parties, events and fashion shows worldwide. Ten years ago she expanded to her retail boutique in New York’s East Village, with a street-level store and workshop below, where all latex designs are made by hand. This woman-owned business remains the sole latex-only shop in New York.

Opening Ceremony Blogs about Collaboration with The Baroness
This Summer our workshop was buzzing as I collaborated with Opening Ceremony, producing a limited edition skirt and top in both pink and black latex, for their many stores around the globe and their website. Once all was delivered I sat down with their blogger and spread the gospel of latex! Read the Opening Ceremony Blog Post about Latex now.
“Her East Village emporium, stocked with a rainbow of her rubbery designs, is the number-one destination for latex in the US.”
Latex Hits the Shelves of Mainstream Fashion
The Baroness partners with Opening Ceremony to produce fashionable latex styles for the masses
New York, NY (Monday, October 25th, 2013) — Two visionaries in contemporary couture – The Baroness, New York’s premiere designer of Elegant, Provocative Latex Fashions, and retail brand Opening Ceremony – partner to design and produce two trendy latex styles for the store’s Fall 2013 line. The Smith Latex Turtleneck, a loose fit, short-sleeved turtleneck with back zip, and the Smith Latex Circle Skirt are both available in black or pink, and in XS/S and M/L. Both pieces are available in Opening Ceremony’s SoHo store and throughout their chain.
Latex, most commonly known for being the go-to fashion staple for the fetish scenester, is now seen as avant garde in mainstream fashion. New shapes such as looser fit and contemporary styles are modeled on runways, shown in stores and seen strutting down the busy streets of fashionable cities everywhere.
The Baroness, a pioneer in the movement to create wearable latex as well as custom latex couture, is well known for her classic styles with a fresh twist. When asked about her thoughts on latex going mainstream, the Baroness says, “In the 20 years I’ve worked with latex, it’s come out of the dark and into the light, from the privacy of the bedroom to the bright lights of the silver screen, high fashion catwalks and red carpet award shows…and now it’s hitting the streets!”
No stranger to the fashion and entertainment worlds, The Baroness’ latex designs have been worn by stars such as Serena Williams, Nikki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Taylor Momsen, and Janet Jackson. Her latex creations have been featured in W, V, Vogue, InStyle, Elle, Relapse Magazine, Style Noir magazine, and many others. One of The Baroness’ previous design partnerships was with Visionaire, for a collaborative art project with Lacoste which traveled the globe and influenced fashionistas worldwide. Latex has entered the realms of haute couture!
Nor is this the first time fashion designers have sought The Baroness’ latex expertise. Partnered with menswear designer Patrik Ervell, the duo created transparent and black ponchos and cargo jackets for his streetwear line. A later partnership with Norisol Ferrari produced several dresses and skirts for her triumphant debut line at Alice Tully Hall.
On the cutting edge of style, Opening Ceremony adopts a multinational approach to retail. In addition to stocking the best pieces from both iconic and emerging homegrown designers, every year Opening Ceremony showcases the spirit and merchandise of a visiting country, transforming each store into a marketplace for exotic souvenirs and international talent – and this year it’s The Baroness’ Latex!
